Known as the gift of the gods, the coconut palm tree plays an important role in the life of Sri Lankans. Most households have a coconut tree in their garden and each will use 12-14 coconuts a week. The coconut is a national delicacy, with every part of the palm tree utilised in Sri Lanka.

The palm trees last for about 40 years and yield 10-40 coconuts depending on the season. The King Coconut is the perfect drink whilst the milk, cream and oil from the coconut is used throughout the island’s cuisine, from curries to sweets. The left-over grated coconut is even used for cleaning!
